Dr. Thng obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at National University of Singapore. Dr. Thng finished his surgical training at National University Hospital while obtaining approval from Specialist Accreditation Board Singapore and the ACGME-I (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education – International) under the American Board of Surgeons. His academic achievements included M.Med (Surgery) and MRCS (Ire) qualifications before he received Fellowships from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (FRCS) and Academy of Medicine, Singapore (FAMS).

Dr. Thng completed his specialized training in Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery at two distinguished medical institutions: the Department of Hepatopancreatobiliary & Liver Transplant Surgery at Singapore General Hospital alongside the Minimally Invasive HPB Surgery program at Seoul National University Hospital in Bundang, South Korea. Dr. Thng obtained advanced training in surgery through his experience at Far Eastern Hospital Taiwan followed by the Prince of Wales HPB division in Hong Kong and the Hepatobiliary and Visceral Transplant Department at Heidelberg University Hospital in Germany.
