Prof Tay Kiang Hiong

Clinical Associate Professor Tan Hiang Khoon is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Singapore General Hospital and a Senior Consultant specializing in Head and Neck Surgery. He is affiliated with the National Cancer Centre Singapore and the SingHealth Duke-NUS Head and Neck Centre. Dr. Tan has extensive clinical expertise in managing head and neck cancers, including thyroid and parathyroid conditions, using advanced techniques such as endoscopic surgery. His areas of interest include head and neck cancer, hypopharyngeal cancers, laryngeal cancer, melanoma, nasopharyngeal cancer, and skin cancer.

Dr. Tan earned his medical degree from the National University of Singapore in 1991 and completed a PhD in Science from the University of Bristol, UK, in 2002. He furthered his specialization by obtaining diplomas in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology and Clinical Cancer Research from France in 2007 and 2008. Throughout his career, Dr. Tan has held various leadership roles, including Director of the SingHealth Duke-NUS Global Health Institute and Group Director of the International Collaboration Office at SingHealth. Additionally, he serves as a Clinical Associate Professor at the SingHealth Duke-NUS Oncology Academic Clinical Programme and has contributed significantly to academic and medical research.

Recognized for his leadership and dedication, Dr. Tan has received numerous awards, including the SingHealth Excellence Award for Champion of Change Leader in 2014 and the Singapore Medical Association Outstanding Research Mentor Award in 2013. His research primarily focuses on prognostic and risk stratification in head and neck cancers, exploring the use of genetic and epigenetic markers to predict metastatic potential and treatment response. He is also an advocate for clinical trials that bridge gaps between scientific advancements and practical applications in patient care.

Dr. Tan has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and actively participates in clinical trials and collaborative research initiatives. Some of his notable studies include investigations into the outcomes of radiation-induced head and neck cancers and the use of mobile flexible nasopharyngoscopes for cancer screening in Vietnam. In addition to his research endeavors, Dr. Tan has contributed to the development of innovative surgical techniques and remains dedicated to improving patient outcomes through cutting-edge medical advancements.
